United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) acts as the voice of the environment within the United Nations system. It provides leadership and encourages partnership for the wise use and sustainable development of the global environment. Among its many activities, UNEP assesses environmental conditions, develops environmental instruments, strengthens institutions and facilitates the transfer of knowledge for sustainable development through partnerships with other UN organizations, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and the private and civil sectors.
